Theatre that borrows the city as its stage.
Woolf's Orlando as AR stage sets at five Innere Stadt sites — premiered 25 Aug 2023. Concept: Anisoglu & Pacher. Me: UX/XR consulting + the companion app — identity, flows, screens.
A new theatre format, not a tech demo.
Five stations, each a hybrid stage: real site + digital layer — image, song, performance, light. Audience on loaned phones, walking between epochs. The risk: tech upstaging theatre.
The directors needed someone who could make AR serve the theatre rather than compete with it — format, feasibility, and the audience’s path through five public sites.
What made it hard.
- Public space — five open-air sites in the city centre, uncontrolled light, passers-by, permits
- A cold audience on loaned devices — zero onboarding, headphones on, timeslot pressure
- Interdisciplinary artists — video, opera, dance, visual art, narration — one coherent experience
- Theatre logic first — AR as digital stage set, not spectacle
An identity — and a full app — built from an oval, a line, and the city.
An oval mark holding Orlando's epochs · paper tones with one orange accent · a station map with numbered pins, a per-chapter narrative, a schedule, and a readiness check before each AR scene — wayfinding in service of story.
